Chapter 35 â Pendulum Swings
Light blinded me. The cold stone walls caught me as I stumbled on legs that felt far too long to be mine. I stared at my hands, also not mine. What the hell? Iâd never jumped into someone else in a vision. Mine were either first-person shooter or movie view, but this was different. I caught my reflection in a nearby glass-covered portrait and touched his face beneath his fingers.
Khellen.
A blood-curdling scream broke through my realization, and I ran down the hall until I stood in front of an ornate door that mirrored the doors to his suite. She screamed again, the sound fading out at the end. Was I too late?
I slammed against the door with both hands, and they cracked beneath my effort but did not move.
âKhellen!â she screamed for him, the word edged with frantic emotion.
âIâm coming!â I backed across the hallway and threw myself against the doors again. The great metal hinges pinged as bolts broke, and the doors fell inward with a reverberating crash. I stepped through the cloud of debris, rapier at the ready to vanquish her captor, but the blade tip wavered and dipped at the sight of Anastacia kneeling beside a red-haired woman who otherwise couldâve been Khellenâs twin.
âAnastacia, stop! Stop right now!â
The girl looked up at me from Ariannaâs body, eyes dark as pitch in her pale face, framed by those telltale curls. Her jaw hung slack, breathing shallow, and she hissed. âShe is mine!â
âNo! You cannot have her.â
The color of life slipped from his sisterâs face, and I ran to her, pushing the child away. The connection broken, Anastaciaâs irises emerged from the inky darkness and a high, keening wail escaped her lips.
I pushed away the sudden urge to console her. Only Arianna mattered now. I scooped her off the floor and into his lap, sword discarded in a clatter onto the stone floor. âSister,â I whispered. âPlease stay with me. Please, please, please!â
Her eyes fluttered, the same blue irises stared up. One hand reached up to touch his face, already cool against my skin. Her mouth worked soundlessly, like she was searching for the perfect last words. âKhel....â
I rocked where we sat and pushed the hair from her face. âHush now, Ari. There will be time to talk after youâve rested.â
She coughed, her hand dropping to her mouth. When she pulled it away, the pale skin at the corners of her mouth shone bright with blood. âKhel, listen to me. Anastacia didnât do this.â
âBut I saw her!â I interrupted.
Arianna made small soothing sounds from their childhood and ran her bloodied fingers against my cheek. âYou saw what you were meant to see, brother. Sheâs a child.â
I glared, pushed away angry tears. âShe is a monster.â
She smiled, but it didnât cut through the soft clouds rolling across her eyes. âShe is a child,â she repeated. âShe is not safe beneath the mound. She....â Arianna coughed again, a violent movement that folded her over in my arms. âKhellen, take care of this before she falls into the wrong hands.
